This Saturday is World Suicide Prevention Day, something I believe is a must in educating people on and raising awareness for. This isn’t going to be a long post admittedly, but as long as it gets people thinking that’s all that really matters.
It is estimated that around 800,000 people die by suicide each year. To put that into a more understandable perspective, that’s 1 person every 40 seconds. But that’s not all, times that by 25 and that is how many more people attempt suicide. It’s unthinkable! That many people ending their own lives or even attempting to.
Now I am not going to ramble on about statistics or say that suicide is ‘wrong’ or anything like that because I don’t think it’s wrong in a sense, I think it is a shame that people get that low in life where this seems like the best option for them. No, my message today is just to remind people everybody is different and we don’t know how they truly feel or what they are thinking so always, try your best to help out people and just make them feel even the slightest bit of happiness or kindness. Whether that is a warm smile and passing complement, to listening and comforting someone who needs support. Something as little as a hello and a smile can have a huge impact on someone. Kindness costs nothing but it’s valued more than anything.
I have had many family members and friends who has committed suicide and I often think about if things were different, if I was there or someone else was there to talk them out of it, or even if someone had made a kind gesture throughout the day, would it have changed anything? But there is no answer to that. All I can hope is that any kind gestures I make may make a difference to someone else.
Also, if you feel you need to talk, but don’t feel comfortable talking to friends and family then please, click here.
So to sum up, my message is to spread to love, lend an ear and be kind, you never know who you may save.
